Other passions

Mentorship

One of the things I enjoy the most of being in science, is to have the opportunity to train students in field and lab techniques. I think that as a mentor, being empathetic and a good listener is crucial to hep students that come from historically excluded groups in the society to realize not only that they can do science, but also that they belong to if they want!

As a Mexican woman of color, I feel related to this, and I am thankful with all the wonderful mentors I have encountered in my journey <3

Teaching

Alongside mentorship, being in front of a group is another of my passions. Having grown up with high-school teacher parents, I learned since little how important is the role of the teacher in a society.

I have TA'ed statistics courses in The National Autonomous University of Mexico (Spanish: Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), back in the days when I was a Masters student. I can't wait to be a TA in UC, Riverside :)

Promotion of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

I believe this is a matter of Social Justice and I am very passionate about it. Alongside with insects4inclusion, I serve since 2020 as the Graduate student representative of the Faculty committee for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Entomology Department at UC Riverside. This committee has triggered the creation of the “Advancing Inclusivity in Entomology Scholarship”, which provides paid research experience to undergraduates who belong to underrepresented groups in science.
